Lesson one

Show the children a photo of a bridge and pretend that you went over the bridge and as you went over the bridge you noticed some hair on the bridge so you picked it up. Wonder with your child who it could belong to. Wonder about which story they may be learning about.

Show your child the story map of The Billy Goats Gruff and tell the story to your child.  Once you have told the story, go back and read it again, encouraging your child to join in. In school we will make up actions to the story that I will post online asap so you can use these actions with your child.

Make sure your child understands the vocabulary gruffly, stream, trip, trap, over, bridge, pass by, finally, banged, mighty, splash & fresh, green grass.

Play with the new vocab words by acting out parts of the story with them in.

English Lesson Two

Retell the story with map and actions. Encourage your child to join in and if they are not sure of certain parts, practise those.

Play a memory word game with your child.  In preparation for adjectives to describe a troll we will play a memory game.  Try and find things around the house that may be for example, fluffy (fluffy teddy), hairy (hairy doll’s head?!), pointy (knitting needle), grubby (an old sock or dishcloth), bulgy (an overfilled purse), sharp (plastic knife). When you have found the items you put them in your bag saying, “In my bag I have a fluffy teddy.” Then you pass the bag to your child and they say, “In my bag I have a fluffy teddy and a hairy doll’s head.” Then they pass the bag to you and you say, “In my bag I have a fluffy teddy, a hairy dolls head and a pointy needle.” And the game carries on like this so trying to remember the order of the objects. If you can’t find objects use pictures but it is important your child knows what the adjectives mean.

Choose one of the pictures of a troll at the end of the troll power point. Describe the troll with your child, describing parts of its body like pointy ears, bulgy eyes, grubby face. etc.

Encourage your child to draw their own troll and write words to describe it, e.g pointy ears, sharp teeth, long nose, bulging eyes.
