Owl Class - Home Learning 13th July 2020

Hello Owls,
Well done for all the effort you put into last week's home learning and your participation in the Sumdog National Contest.  Here is your learning for this week.

This week we are reading a book called 'Bringing the rain to Kapiti Plain'.  It ends our work on weather and climate.  I hope you enjoy it!

English - Choose 3 activities
-Read 'Bringing the rain to Kapiti Plain' with an adult.
-Rhyming words are important in this story and gives it its rhythm.  What other rhyming words can you think of that the author could have used instead?  Try and think of at least 5 for each box.  Sheet below.
-Change some of the words in the story.  For example - This is the great Kapiti Plain all fresh and green from the African rain.  You could change it to - This is the wide Kapiti Plain all busy and awake from the African rain.  Try yourself using the sheet below.
-Use a dictionary to look up the meaning of these words from the story: belated, migrate, acacia trees, herdsmen, stork, cattle, drought.  Draw a picture to show the meaning of each word and write a definition.
-Log on to Bug Club and do some of the phonics and spelling activities (prefix sheets below).
-Fill in the grammar sheet to identify the types of words in the book.

Maths - Choose 3 activities
-Complete the patterns on the sequencing games using 2D shapes. This will help to recognise 2D shapes and to problem solve.  Choose an appropriate level.
-Look at the tins/cartons of food in your cupboards. Discuss which ones are cylinders, which are cubes and which are cuboids. Sort them into groups. 3D shape mat attached below.
-Go on a shape hunt around the house or on your daily walk. Label things that match the shape names you have been practising.  Look for both 2D and 3D shapes.  Take photos or draw pictures to show me what you found!
-Draw a shape picture using shapes from the 2D shape mat.  Label your shapes.  It might be easier to draw around 2D shapes to be more accurate.
-Log onto TTRS or Sumdog.

Spelling
-Practise your spelling lists.
-Play pond life plurals.
-Complete the re prefix sheet.  This prefix means 'again' or 'back'.
-Complete the un prefix sheet.  This prefix means 'not'.
-BBC Bitesize - Prefixes and suffixes.  There is a quiz for both!

Reading
-Bug Club or read books from home.

Topic/Science
-Watch a weather forecast on TV.  Watch how it is presented.  Using the weather maps attached, either write or video your own weather report.  Use positional vocabulary - in the north....in the south...There are lots of weather maps to choose from!
-Watch The Lion King clip - it features Kapiti Plain - what animals do you see?  Choose one and draw your favourite!  Include some sentences about your chosen animal.

Keep going! Nearly there!
