Segmenting = saying the phonemes separately like a robot in order to spell a word.

Phonics for Wednesday ai and ay
Practise reading all the grapheme/phonemes from Phase 2, 3 and 4 using the power points attached.  I have added a video of phase 2 & 3 sounds so you know how to pronounce them.  If your child is unsure of any sounds, focus on these to try to commit them to memory.

Teach your child to read the words: she, all, went, from & said.  Write them on card and put them on the table, say a word and see if your child can point to the correct word.  Stick them around the house and ask your child to find each word one at a time.

Teach your child the phoneme ai by going through the ai lesson assigned to your child on Bug Club. Make sure they sing the alphabet song first.

Read the words aim, main, rain, wait.

Practise spelling the words wait, pain & bait. Notice that the ai digraph is written in the middle of the word.

Teach your child that ay also says ai.

Find the lesson ay on Bug Club that has been assigned to your child and go through the lesson.

Tell your child the rule for spelling words containing the ay digraph is that it comes at the end of a word like in play, or say.  Do the rest of the Bug Club lesson ay.

As well as the words on Bug Club practise reading the following words: day, play may, spray, stray, delay.

As well as the words on Bug Club practise segmenting the words for spelling and write the words stay, tray, clay, pray, play.

Ask your child to read the sentence:  The dog may play in the rain in the day.

Ask your child to write:  The dog will play in the rain.

Practise reading the days of the week.
