Science Friday

Dear Robins

For science this week, Baby Bear is planning to travel into space but is concerned that he may get cold. He is trying to find out which material would make the best coat to keep him warm. Can you think of a way of testing which material might be best?  Which would be the worst material? Would paper be a good material?  Would plastic?  Why? Can you think of a way to test your ideas? Can you draw a picture to show us your ideas?

Note for parents...
One way of testing whether a material keeps something warm is to have small bottles (like fruit shoot bottles) of hot water (all at the same temperature) then wrap them in the material you are testing and leave them in the same place.  After a certain length of time you could then take the temperature of the water to see how much it has dropped. Of course this would need careful supervision from an adult because of the hot water.  It doesn't need to be boiling though to start with, it could be just hot to touch.   Your child may come up with a much better idea.

Good luck
From Mrs Slade.
