Living, Loving and Learning with God.
At St. Mary’s we are committed to planning and delivering an exciting and stimulating curriculum for all our children. Our Catholic ethos is woven into everything we do and we work to ensure that every child has the opportunity to develop his or her own strengths and develop in self-esteem and confidence. Lessons and learning experiences are well-structured, which leads to confident, enthusiastic and independent learners, well prepared for secondary education and the challenges of modern life.
Following recent external reviews we have worked to ensure that Literacy and Mathematical core skills are being well taught and that these are being embedded in all areas of the curriculum. We have whole school approaches to the teaching of writing and mathematics.
Reading in KS1 is taught using a book band framework of texts in guided and independent reading. St Mary's has worked to develop the strong support of parents in valuing and supporting a positive start in reading. Phonics is taught daily using the LCP scheme which follows the national Letters and Sounds framework.
We work to make the curriculum exciting and relevant to the children’s needs by building in opportunities for across phase teaching and 'real life ' experiences as well as choosing cross-curricular themes that engage the interests of the children and spark their enthusiasm. Class visits are organised each year to places of interest related to the curriculum. For Year 6 there is an annual residential trip to an activity centre. Please see our 'New's page for updates into our life at St Mary's.
St Mary’s has a strong tradition as a music school. We recognise that musical activities can have a huge benefit on children’s intellectual, personal and social skills and compliments our school assemblies and Acts of Worship. Music improves phonetic awareness and helps to develop language and literacy skills. We have a specialist music leader who teaches within school and also facilitates a wide range of experiences and opportunities for our pupils. All children are encouraged to sing well, play an instrument and join in with the various music clubs and events on offer at the school and in the wider community.
Please see below the curriculum intention document that supports our work as well as detail of our Foundation Class.
