Phonics

Advice for parents above on how to teach reading the tricky words.
Above is how we write a sentence during phonics.

Monday

Recap all the sounds and words learnt so far using the power points attached or phonics play.

Really concentrate this week on reading the high frequency words. Watch a video of how Mrs Burrough would teach 5 words at a time. It is really helpful for your child if the high frequency words can be read by sight without having to be sounded out.  Choose five that your child doesn’t know so well and try to teach those like Mrs Burrough has shown in the video. Once your child is confident with those five, choose the next five.  If five words are too much try three.

Watch Geraldine the giraffe long oo video. Find the Bug Club lesson oo and follow the lesson. As well as practising reading and writing the words in the lesson practise spelling the words too, zoom, cool, boot.  You can talk to your child about the difference between the word to and the word too. The word ‘to’ is directional, going to a place for example, ‘I am going to the park.’  Whereas the word ‘too’ is about quantity, being greater than something. For example, ‘My porridge is too cold/hot.’

Play Buried Treasure on Phonics Play using the long oo phoneme (sound).

Write the sentence, ‘The boot is too cool.’

Watch Mrs Burrough to see how she would teach how to write the sentence.

Recap all the sounds and words learnt so far using the power points attached or phonics play.

Really concentrate this week on reading the high frequency words. It is really helpful for your child if the high frequency words can be read by sight without having to be sounded out.  Once your child is confident with those five, choose the next five.

Watch Geraldine the Giraffe ar video.

Teach reading the words look and too. These words are phonetic so they can be sounded out but if your child can practise reading them by sight, that would be good.

Find the Bug Club ar lesson. Follow the lesson. As well as practising spelling and reading the words on the Bug Club lesson, practise reading the words market, car, cart & hard and writing the words bar, park, card and jar.

Read the questions and answer yes or no…

Can you cook?

Can you zoom in a car?

Is the park far?

Practise reading the words look and too again.

Friday

Recap all the sounds and words learnt so far using the power points attached or phonics play.

How many words have you learnt to read this week? Well done for learning to read more high frequency words.  Keep practising those words every day so you don’t forget them.  And keep adding new words.

We are going to play digraph (two letters that make one sound) spotter.  Write out the following sentences for your child.

I got a fork in my tooth.

My torch is too dark.

She has wood in her foot.

Can your child find the th, ch, sh, or, oo and ar sounds in the words? Underline them. You should have found.

I got a fork in my too th.

My tor ch is too dark.

He has wood in his foot.
