MONDAY

 

Go over all the sounds and high frequency words learnt so far in phase 3 and 5.

 

Teach reading the high frequency word ‘thought’

 

Review the pronunciation of ‘ea’ in the words peach and bead.

 

Teach that ‘ea’ can also be pronounced as a short ‘e’ sound in the words head, dead, ready, bread and heaven.

 

Practise reading the words head, dead, ready, bread and heaven.

 

Read the following words and sort them into two categories – those that have the long ‘ea’ phoneme like in sea and those that have the short phoneme like in the words head.  Breakfast, feather, beads, sea, read, head.

 

Read the sentence: He has feathers in his headdress.

TUESDAY

 

Practise reading and spelling the high frequency words learnt so far in phase 5 and words learnt in phase 4.  See the attached sheet for the phase 4 and 5 high frequency words.

 

Teach spelling the word ‘do’.

 

Teach alternative pronunciation of ‘a’ so it is saying its name in words for example the words acorn bacon, angel, native, Amy and baby.

Read the words acorn, bacon, angel, native, Amy and baby.

 

Practise spelling the words apricot, apron, native, basis, footpath, password and faster.

 

Write the sentence I have an apron at work.

WEDNESDAY

 

Recap all the phonemes/sounds learnt so far in phase 3 and phase 5.

 

Teach reading high frequency words any & saw.

 

Teach alternative pronunciation for ‘y’ in words where it says ee like happy, very, funny, merry and crunchy.

 

Read the words happy, very, funny, merry & crunchy.

 

Practise spelling the words happy, very, Mummy, Daddy, silly.

 

Read the sentence ‘Billy and Molly are happy.’

THURSDAY

 

Practise reading high frequency words and spelling tricky words so far in Phase 5.

 

Teach homographs read and read. For example one is in the past tense, ‘I read my book yesterday at bedtime.’ And one is present tense, ‘I read a book everyday.’

 

Ask children to write a sentence with both read and read pronounced differently. Look at example above.

FRIDAY

 

Practise reading all the sounds learnt so far in phase 3 and 5.

Play split digraph spotter (identify all the split digraphs in the text) using the phoneme spotter postcard attached.

 

Write the sentences…

 

Me and Pete quite like to skate.

Can you slide down a pipe?

Do you like cake or crisps best?

 

Read the attached captions and match to the pictures.
