Phonics Friday

Phonics Reception

Recap all the sounds (phonemes) and high frequency words learnt so far. Use either the power points, phonics play or the flash cards that have been sent home over the year.  It is really important to keep practising reading the sounds (phonemes) and high frequency words. If your child is struggling with learning a particular sound or word, write it on a piece of paper and stick it around the house in different places and get your child to go round the house finding it and reading it.  Another trick to help read sounds or words that don’t seem to be sinking in is to write them in a grid.  Choose 4 words or sounds to use.  When working with the grid you ask your child to read the sounds/words across the row in the grid.  If they don’t know the sound/word you tell them what it is and they repeat it after you.  This is an effective way of learning sounds/words.  I have attached one for you as an example.

Show the digraph ‘ng’ and the two graphemes ‘nk’ together.  The rule for using these spellings is that if the word has an ‘ng’ phoneme (sound) at the end it is spelt with the digraph ‘ng’. If it has the phoneme ‘k’ after the ‘ng’ phoneme, the ‘ng’ phoneme (sound) is spelt with an ‘n’ like in sink and wink.

Practise reading the words pink, think, sing, sink & long. Match them to the pictures which are attached.

Make two headings – one with ‘ng’ at the top and one with ‘nk’ at the top. Say a word and decide whether it ends in ‘ng’ or ‘nk’. Write it underneath the correct headings as a list. Use the words rang, sing, wink, ding & dunk.

Write the sentence together – The pig is in the long sink.
