Wriggly Writers

Activities for Wriggly Writers this week

At school we normally spend between 15 and 20 minutes on wriggly writers.

Please choose one activity to do each day.

Curly caterpillars – please practise the letters in the curly caterpillar family. There is a sheet attached to show you how to write the letters if you wish to use it.

Captions/sentences – please use the pictures from the story ‘Whatever Next?’ to write some simple captions. For example, in the speech bubble, ‘Can I go to the moon?’ and when he is on the moon, ‘Baby Bear had a picnic on the moon with Owl’.  Please use the word bank to help with spelling.  You will be able to show your child the words on the word bank that they need. They will be able to sound out the words, can, moon (after Tuesday’s phonics lesson), picnic & with. I have also attached a sound mat for phases 2 and 3 so your child can use it to help them with their spelling.

Planet Mobile – Preparation by an adult: cut the outer ring of a paper plate and paint it black. You could use a cereal box to make a ring.  Show the children a picture of a planet. We will be using pastels to draw and colour the planets at school but crayons or felt pens will be fine. They then cut out their planet and stick on their black ring. I have attached a picture to show you what it looks like.  We will be doing this activity in wriggly writers for at least two weeks, possibly three depending on how much the children get done in the time given.  For the stars I will encourage the children to draw round a star template then cut it out. The planets will be drawn freehand.

Wool planet – Preparation by an adult: cut a circle out of stiff card – roughly a circle with a 10cm diameter.  Snip a small cut in the edge so the wool will stay there. Then your child can wrap the wool around the cardboard circle until it is covered in wool. I have attached a picture so you can see what it would look like when finished.

High Frequency words – practise spelling the phase 2 and 3 high frequency words, depending on which words your child needs to learn to spell.  If your child can spell the phase 2 and 3 high frequency words have a go at the phase 4 tricky words. If they know how to spell the phase 4 tricky words, have a go at the phase 5 high frequency words.  They are all attached so you know what they are. If your child is willing, this could be a 10 min every day activity.
