Fairtrade at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School

At St Mary’s we have a very active Fairtrade Steering Group made up of Governors, staff and children from St. Mary’s School Council. We became a Fairtrade school in 2014 and over the last year we have held a ‘Fairtrade Theme Day’ which involved all the children learning about Fairtrade through art, music, literacy, DT and games.  The Fairtrade Steering Group have organised several sales of Fairtrade products both at school and at another local primary school.  In March 2013 we held a ‘Big Brew’ and invited all the children’s parents and the local press for afternoon tea to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight and raise awareness of Fairtrade.

The Fairtrade Foundation was established in 1992 by CAFOD, Christian Aid, Oxfam, Traidcraft (now the UK’s leading Fairtrade company), the World Development Movement, and the National Federation of Women’s Institutes in response to poverty in the developing world. The Foundation’s mission is to work with businesses, community groups and individuals to improve the trading position of producer organisations in developing countries and to deliver sustainable livelihoods for farmers, workers and their communities.

At St. Mary’s we are committed to supporting Fairtrade wherever possible.  Fairtrade makes sure that farmers and producers in poorer countries get a fair price for their products to help them support their families and develop their communities.  We believe that buying Fairtrade products will make a difference.
